Today's task is simple:
Set up your account at blogger.com. This will enable you to post comments to the class.
Now please read the 6 Questions below and then respond to TWO of them. Then, wait to read what others have written, and then comment on two different classmates' ideas. These questions are on the topic of Fundamental Human Rights and were inspired by the article "Intrinsic worth, consent, and coercion in economic contexts." YOU DO NOT NEED TO READ THIS ARTICLE NOW.
The Questions:
1) In general what is your point of view on human beings' fundamental/basic rights? Why do you have this view?
2) To what extent should the government ensure that these 'fundamental rights' are protected... especially outside of employee/employer work contracts?
3) Since employees consent to working contracts, should they alone be responsible to make the best possible decisions that cover their fundamental rights? Why or why not?
4) What does 'Self Sufficiency' mean to you? How does a 'self-sufficient' adult male live his life? How does a 'self-sufficient' adult female live her life?
5) Give an example of a situation where an employer's regulations might (unknowingly) compromise the employee's fundamental human rights.
6) Do you believe that in the market economy, humans lose their intrinsic value and are forced/coerced to give up some basic human rights? Discuss.

2) The government should make sure that every human being are well stable. As in not in poverty, have a job and a house. That their employer treats them right and give no certain people special priviledges (sp.?)
ReplyDelete3) Employees should be responsible for their own fundamental rights. If it's not stated in the contact then they should take matter into their own hands and make sure they have them.
ReplyDeleteAs human beings, our fundamental rights/basic rights are written for us in the constitution. These rights include the freedom to practice a religion and everyone deserves an equal chance to suceed in life. They are in place to show that these rights cannot be taken away from the government.
ReplyDelete1. Human and basic rights are rights that should be respected. Don't treat a person badly because they are different from you. Don't treat them differently because they don't have the same knowledge as you do. All humans have the same rights whether or not you are rich or poor. I have this view because some people think that they are better than everyone else. Everyone should be treated equally and they all have the same rights.
ReplyDelete3. No because the employee should work with the employer to help make sure that they have the same rights. An employer should treat the employee fairly and not disrespect them.
3)Since employees consent to working contracts, they should not be the only ones responsible to make the best possible decisions that cover their fundamental right. I think this because the company/business that an employee signs a contract for has rules and their own ways of going about the way things need to be done, especially, in restaurants. I work in a restaurant and it is important that the employee knows their fundamental rights but at the same time it is important for the employer to enforece/make it clear of what they expect to be done as far as rules and guidelines that have to be followed in order to run a good business and give people good customer services. Everyone needs to have their own fundamentals but in a company you have to follow under "their" rules!
ReplyDelete3)Yes, employees should be held responsible to make the best decisions that are important for them in regards to fundemental rights because they signed the contract. Each person individually knows wat is best for them in the work place so it is up to them to be responsible for their decisions.
ReplyDelete4. Self sufficient to me that one relies on theirself for, money, food, and needs. They dont look to other people for help. In other word, an independent person. A self sufficient male lives comfortably, has their own place to call home (excluding parent's basement), Has a very stable job. Overall they live comfortably. For a self sufficient woman, it probably is the same way of living, but all they lack (if they are single) is protection. Every women wants to feel protected, and money can not buy the security that she needs to feel safe. She needs a man in her life. Her protector.

ReplyDelete1) In general what is your point of view on human beings' fundamental/basic rights? Why do you have this view?
Human beings are consisted with different values and rights. I feel that many people should represent who they are no matter where they came from. People should have the right to make their own choices and decisions. In other words people should live their freeely without having anybody's consent. The reason why I feel this way because America only consists with freedom. If freedom is so valuable, people should practice it everyday.
6) Do you believe that in the market economy, humans lose their intrinsic value and are forced/coerced to give up some basic human rights? Discuss.
People do lose their instric values with Market Economy. Market Economy relates to companies who make their own prices and do not consider other people's opinion unless you work with the company. People do not have a choice to make their own prices when it comes to sales retail or buying groceries..
1) Human beings basic rights should be for them to do what pleases them as long as it does not harm anyone else. They should be able to do what they want in order to make a better living for themselves and others that they might be caring for. I think so, because people have different ways of living and if they take away one person's right of living, they should be taking away everyone else's as well.
ReplyDelete2) The government should just not bother with every little thing that everyone is doin...:)
1) In general what is your point of view on human beings' fundamental/basic rights? Why do you have this view?
ReplyDeleteA)I believe strongly in fundamental rights, without them we cannot voice our opinions and have our own individual voice. Fundamental basic rights mean they are yours and you are born with them and they cannot be taken away.

ReplyDelete1)My opinion on human beings fundamental is that we human have the right to progress and learn about there surroundings. The ability to progress, learn and grow. That we have the right to breath air for free, the right to control are emotions, the right to be able to make own decisions. The basic skills I think are able to walk on their own two feet and are able to take control of there lives.
Why do i have this veiw is because every human i think have the basics tool to be the person who they want to be, having a brain, having 2 thumbs, and so on. That the fundamentals is from our human "instincts" we teach our selves to walk, to talk and etc....
1] I think that everyone should have to right to express themselves freely. Judgement shouldnt be based on the way you look but whats really deep down inside. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said you shouldnt be based on the color of their skin but of the content of their cahracter. People should be able to express themselves and shiouldnt be judgded on everyday activitis like religion, food.
ReplyDelete1) In general what is your point of view on human beings' fundamental/basic rights? Why do you have this view?
ReplyDeleteI believe that basic rights are nexessary, so that everyone can have an equal opportunity for protection, and punishment. Everyone is equal in court, just as people have to right to expression, or religion. It is also about basic human needs.
5) Give an example of a situation where an employer's regulations might (unknowingly) compromise the employee's fundamental human rights.
In a job one many not openly have a freedom of expression in a work enviorment. Also for winter holidays they can not longer have a "christmas party" they must call ti a holiday party due to the fact that practicing a religion in a work place is inapropriate.
ESTHER SAINTERLING's response to question number 1. My general belief of human beings' fundamental/basic rights is that they are not quite necessarily fair. I feel that they should be more detailed. For example, I feel that "Freedom of Speech" isn't what it really means. The freedom for an individual to express the way they feel or their concern has limits, so where is the freedom in all of this? Just some basic right of an individual is malinterpreted at times and thats the way that i feel about them. There always seem to be a fine print about one of the rights that most people might not know about, so i feel that it is only right to say that its "Freedom of Speech" only if one is allowed to say whatever that they would like and not get penalized, or criticized for it.
ReplyDeleteESTHER SAINTERLING's response to question number 4. Selfi- sufficient to means being independent and being able to provide for yourself and/ or your family without the help of others. This independence also brings confidence to the person. In my opninon a self sufficient woman takes care of herself while taking care of her family (if she has one). She pays her own bills and has a good job in order to do so. A self sufficient man definitely provides for his family as well (if he has one). he takes care of himself as well as the female does. I don't think that it should matter if it is a male or female. As long as they are taking care of themselves and their responsibilities then they are categorized as being self - sufficient.
1)My point of view on human beings fundamental/basic rights is that people should have their own rights and freedom which they are entitled to. I feel like you can say your own opinion to what the matter is about.
ReplyDeletecomment to DJ's question to number 4 .
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree with her point of view with what self sufficient means and how the men and women are and live their lives when they care considered independent. Its true that a woman would want to feel protected once they are independent.
5] An example of how an employer might compromise with the employee's fundamental human rights with out knowing is giving the employee a holiday off. They may not know that the person is religious and might give them the day off in the kindness of thier hearts. The employee could be thankful.
ReplyDelete5) An example of a situation where an employer's regulation's (unknowingly) might compromise the employee's fundametal human rights is, an employee has to change the way they act in order to act propperly according to the job possision that they hold. Again, since I work in a restaurant, you always have to act like you are happy even if you are not. You always have to smile and be nice and get your guests EVERYTHING that they want with out a problem. YOu have to "act" like you love it even if you don't (that day or if oyur having a bad day). The way you act towards customoers may not always be the way you act towards others. When you work in a restauraunt you usually have to put a different front on. Another way regualtions could change someones fundametal right is a dress code. An employee may dress completely differnt outside of work but when they go to work that have to wear something totally different than what they are used to even if they don't like what they are wearing, it is their job description to dress according to the dress code even if it is somethin they don't like.
ReplyDelete2) I believe the government should try to support people who ar e less advantaged then other people. I believe these people should be provide with a good job that can help their families and a roof over there heads. I believe when a person is at there job they should be treated the same as any other person and given the wages they are worthy of.
ReplyDelete4) A self sufficient individual is a person who relies on themselves and no one else. They are a person who does not seek help from the people around them or the government. A self sufficient male probably has a house, a car, and job that they payoff themselves. A female probably lives the same or better.
I like what shawn said "Fundamental basic rights mean they are yours and you are born with them and they cannot be taken away." This is absolutly true and i believe that no matter what every american should have them.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Molly Mullen's answer on question #1 because people should live their life as they want to. Why have people telling us what to do! Unless you are a kid under 18. America is all about freedom!
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Esther Sainterling on question number 4. It doesn't matter if your a male or female, it depends whether you have a family and can handle the situation of being a parent of a single parent..
3) Since employees consent to working contracts, should they alone be responsible to make the best possible decisions that cover their fundamental rights? Why or why not?
ReplyDeleteI think it should be a conbination of both because the rights belong to you and only you so no one can take them away. Also if you are the only one who has a decision in your own fundamental rights you can use that as an excuse to get out of something, for example you boss gives you an order and you can argue with him saying that his orders go against your fundamental rights.
6. As the economy is going inoto turmoil (omg. I believe that people become more passive about their rights. We put up with our bosses who may treat us unfairly, but we cant quit because we dont all have back up jobs to pay the rent. Some of us end up says, "I know it's wrong but, what can i do?" Our perspectiive, and motto over the years has become, "its all for the money." We've become immune to being stripped from our rights. Sometimes we dont even pay it any mind anymore that we are being mis treated because we do not have the upper hand. Sadly. money equals power and respect. the more you money you have the more you will have rights.
ReplyDeletecomment on Hola's question to number 2 .
ReplyDeleteYea, thats true. WHO'S HOLA BY THE WAY. the government should protect the right's of the people more when it comes to jobs, safety, and definitely when it comes to laws.
I also agree with DJ when she said that men are settled and can live comfortably with a stable job. I also agree with her when she said that women are lacking protection and that they need a guy to help her in life. I thought that the parents basement part was funny.
ReplyDeleteIn reponse to jared's comment to number 2... I agree that the government should do more to help people who are unable to do it for themselves due to their circumstances. Millions of people in this country are at or below the poverty line and nothing is being done about it. America is known for being the most profited nation in the world...So we should act like it!!
ReplyDeleteI agree with wat kellie says about how a person should have their own rights. She makes a good point about Dr Martin Luther King about how he says people shouldnt be judged by the color of their skin but but their character. A person should be able to go to a job and be judged on the way they perform on the task given rather than how dark or how light they are.
ReplyDeleteAs a response to Kellie's #1.. I feel the same way! Everyone should be able to express themselves freely. This is a free country for people. No matter where people come from. People should do what makes them comfortable as long as it is legal. As Kellie said, people shouldnt be judged on their color. Whether you are black, white, asian, Indian etc. color shouldn't matter, if you think about it we are all the same in most ways, we may have different views on different subjects but in the end we are all human!
ReplyDeleteewww i said inoto...sry i meant into
ReplyDeleteRESPOND TO KAYLA'S VIEW ON QUESTION 1: I completely agree with Kayla. We have the same views :]
ReplyDeleteI like what erica said about the contract, it is true once you sign it you give them the rights to your rights in a sense.
ReplyDeleteBrian Sou
ReplyDelete2) To what extent should the government ensure that these 'fundamental rights' are protected... especially outside of employee/employer work contracts?
I think the government should keep fundamental rights as a law but the government should not intrude and invade people rights. That the government ensure the law but cannot bring it apond the people. "Fundamental rights" is the same thing of having human rights. That we the people have the the right to make our own desision not the governments. The government passes the law and we people are the ones who make the desicion of following it or not. Yea, people out side of work do contracts because people outside of work have the same rights. That employers have to follow orders but they either have to obey it or not.
I agree with Jared's # 2! At jobs everyone should be paid what they are worthy of. People should not be paid any more or any less because of their color or background. If you have the same job as someone else they should not get paid higher unless there is more work to the job or you work full time compared to an employee that works part time. Everyone should be treated equal!
ReplyDeleteI agree with jared because how is someone supposed to thrive in this country when\ if they are born into this world with nothing and the odd's are stacked up against them
ReplyDeleteI like what kate said "When you work in a restauraunt you usually have to put a different front on. Another way regualtions could change someones fundametal right is a dress code. An employee may dress completely differnt outside of work but when they go to work that have to wear something totally different than what they are used to even if they don't like what they are wearing, it is their job description to dress according to the dress code even if it is something they don't like." It is absolutlry true you must put this aside in a work enviorment.
ReplyDeleteEsther is talkin about how our rights are to vague and i totally agree because, they say we have a freedom of speech? yet in school i am liberated on what to say so that i do not offend anyone...if it's MY freedom of speech...WHO CARES!
ReplyDeleteIn respons to Hola's question for number 2...(whos HOLA!!). People's rights are so important and are the many things that we hold dear. It is up to the public to know our rights and it is up to the government to make sure that they are inforced and not abused in any way. Many peiople try to get away with abisuing the rights of others which will make a pretty horrible situation. thats why is is imperative for people to become educated with the rights and liberties that we all have
ReplyDeletei know who hola is!
ReplyDeleteRESPOND TO JEN FAGUNDES QUESTION #1: I agree with Jen. "I believe that basic rights are nexessary, so that everyone can have an equal opportunity for protection, and punishment. Everyone is equal in court, just as people have to right to expression, or religion. It is also about basic human needs." She expresses the same feelings as I have
ReplyDeleteSelf-sufficent means that you have to be by yourself like living by yourself and no one taking care of you.
ReplyDeletea male self-sufficent means his has to do everything by himself and no one can help him like taking care of the house and by paying bills.
ReplyDelete1)In the respond to kayla that people do have the right of there point of view and that our opinion do matter
ReplyDelete5) In the respond of jen i agreed what she said because people cant celebrate either there religion or holiday in work maybe sometimes but people dont have the freedom in work because it might be innapropriate.
I think the basic human rights are the ones really just listed in the Constitution’s Bill of Rights (the first 10 commandments. They are rights such as freedom of speech, religion, assembly, petition, and press. I feel that it is necessary to have these freedoms and rights written out so that there is no confusion or questioning as a human being on what you can and cannot do.
ReplyDeleteI have this view because I happen to like order, regulation, and knowing what I can and cannot do. I basically do not like to get in trouble for anything. So if there are a set of rules and laws then there is no way that someone can say or question “no that is not true.” I think that there is a reason why laws and regulations are created. It is to keep peace, law, and order between people and the country as a whole.
Pui lee:
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with Jared Grimes #2. People should be provided with a good job that are at a disadvantage. Equal opportunity in the workforce is definitely important. This country is about equality and balance. This could ensure that.
I definitely agree with Kate)#3
ReplyDeleteI agree with how Kate sees that not just employers are responsible for the overseeing of their human rights but that the employee is responsible as well. Also that companies have their own rules and regulations that need to be followed simply to keep the business running and because it is that company's company.
